Summer Language Camp 2008™

Imagine:

Your son immersed in the language and culture of Paris, Mexico, or Cameroon while listening to cool, eclectic, and sophisticated music

Your daughter enjoying the sun while playing an outdoor soccer or basketball game that simultaneously develops her language skills

Intriguing?

It's StanleyMaria's Language Camp 2008™

Here are a few comments from our previous Language Camps:

"We play games and have a picnic, and we learn all the numbers 1-600.  And we learn lots of Spanish." Ingrid, 4th grade

"... I learned to count very high and we played fun games with my teacher Rudy and my friends.  I will try to come back next year.  I recommend this camp to my friends." Kate, 4th grade

"We played different games relating to books that we learned read that helped us remember the words we'd learned.  It was a pretty fun way to learn Spanish (especially since it was a small group)." Karen 6th grade

"Wonderful program.  I've been recommending you to friends, family and people I meet."  P. Calderon, Parent and Executive Director, Suzuki Music Program

"My son and daughter gained so much from Summer Language Camp this summer. It brought to life all those lessons from Spanish class at school making them more tangible, more real. They feel more comfortable with the language. This fall, they've complained that Spanish class is a little boring because they're reviewing what they already learned in Language camp. I say, "more Language Camp next summer!"

Thank you StanleyMaria for an investment well spent. My kids had fun, met new people, and they learned. It's a great combination."

Brenda, a new Language Camp convert and Ray School Parent

Camp Overview

Summer fun with language learning.  Through word games, skits, music, art, and outdoor activities, children gain an introduction or enhance their existing Spanish or French speaking skills while learning about the cultures in which the language is spoken.

During the course of the program, our instructors, who represent a combination of both native and non-native speakers, aim to speak 75% of the time in the target language, subject to the age and language proficiency of the students.  We seek to find a healthy balance between creating a non-intimidating and yet challenging environment for the participants.  We welcome the student who has had no Spanish or French language instruction, as well as the student who wants to improve his or her language skills during the summer.   As a logistical matter, we maintain a student, instructor ratio of 10:1 and group children according to both age and language proficiency.  (There is no pre-program testing; we are able to make an assessment of the child’s language proficiency at the start of the program.)

The specific activities of the program change from year to year dependent on the expertise and background of our instructors (many of whom teach or work as counselors during the academic school year in leading public and private schools throughout the U.S. and abroad.)  By the end of the program, our goal is 1) to have inspired or created a sense of excitement in our students about learning a second language, 2) to have exposed a child to different cultures, and 3) to have fostered a greater sense of confidence and team spirit in each student.

What are our other language services for children?

  • Language Tutors: We provide patient and caring language tutors to help your child with homework, test preparation, and ultimately to develop a greater sense of self-confidence with respect to learning a second language.

  • After School and Weekend Programs: We offer a fun and productive way for children to build on their language skills beyond school hours while at the same time avoiding the feeling that it's just an extended day of school work.

  • Day Programs: If your school does not have a language department, don't fret any longer.  We can establish a language program for your school and help the administration and staff manage it from start to finish.

  • International Immersion Programs: Here's an opportunity to take classroom learning to the real world -- all in a safe, secure, and well-established environment.  These are the cornerstones of our international immersion programs.

Why is language study for children important?

Children are naturally curious and consequently are able to quickly learn a second language. Children who gain some familiarity with a second language find it easier to continue learning the language later in life. Children who are exposed to multiple languages are said to perform better on standardized tests, such as the SAT and ACT. These points alone are sound arguments to support "foreign" language study for children. There are still other considerations to encourage parents and academic administrators to expose children to the language and culture of others.

If we consider the world children live in today and will certainly encounter in the very near future, we find a community marked by rapid change and linkages among people of diverse backgrounds and cultures. Changing world demographics, boundless global telecommunications, and booming worldwide travel are only a few factors shaping the social landscape of our world. With this dynamic as a backdrop, it is all the more important for our young adults of tomorrow to communicate in a second or third language.

The benefits of broadening one's language skills are tremendous and serve to open many doors -- today and tomorrow, at home and abroad, professionally and personally.

Albertson's Jewel Food Store serves as the host for StanleyMaria's Language Olympics Competition.  While naming food products in French, participants race the clock by maneuvering through the store.
